iPad 2 vs New iPad – Can You Make Out Any Differences?

If you are currently in possession of both the iPad 2 and the New iPad, are you able to tell the cosmetic difference between the two models? Place them side by side and try to see if you can find any difference between them, especially pertaining to the clarity of the display. If you have done this, do you find yourself stumped? If so, the technologists at The Next Web have put this conundrum to the test by asking customers leaving an Apple store to determine the cosmetic difference between the two models.

As you can see from their results in the video below, it is not definitive, and all of the answers have been mixed. A variable to try to determine the newer model is mostly by “which has the brighter/clearer screen.”

John Brownlee of The Cult of Mac has an interesting hypothesis as to why some people chose the iPad 2 in this test:

“It’d be interesting to hear what the reasons were why people chose the iPad 2 over the new iPad. It’s hard to escape the fact that many of the people who choose the iPad 2 over the new iPad have glasses, implying that they may not have eyesight good enough to distinguish retina quality in a display (which as Apple defines it means the ability to distinguish one pixel from another with 20/20 vision).”

iPad 2 Gets A Battery Boost From New Processor

Processor upgrade makes the newer iPad 2 more energy efficient. Try That!

Last month we brought you a surprising story about the iPad 2. While most Apple products get a price reduction with the launch of their next-generation successor, one thing they don’t get is a hardware upgrade. It turned out, though, that with the launch of the new iPad the iPad 2 got a processor upgrade.

The iPad 2′s new processor, which is the same as the processor found in the third-generation Apple TV, is effectively the same as the A5 chip that was originally in the iPad 2 (and iPhone 4S). The difference is that it has been “ported” to Samsung’s new 32nm HMKG manufacturing process. As such, the chip’s performance isn’t greatly effective. That is, the 32nm chip isn’t faster than the original version. The big difference is an increase in energy efficiency. At the time, there was speculation that iPad users might see an improvement in battery life, thats great though!

Now AnandTech has confirmed that is the case. The updated iPad 2 does show an improvement in battery life. According to AnandTech’s tests, the updated iPad 2 performed better than both the original iPad 2 and the new iPad when playing a graphics- and power-intensive game – Infinity Blade II. While the new iPad lasted for 5.58 hours, the updated iPad 2 lasted nearly 8 hours.

(A quick note on terminology: “iPad 2,4″ is Apple’s official model designation for the updated iPad 2. The iPad 2,1 is the wi-fi only model of the original iPad 2. The iPad 2,2 and iPad 2,3 are the AT&T and Verizon 3G models, respectively.)

The iPad 2,4 showed similar results during a lower-intensity game. They also tested video playback capabilities. To test the various iPads, they took a 720p High Profile H.264 video ofHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Removing the credits gave the movie a run time of exactly one hour and fifty-eight minutes. The movie was played in a loop until each tablet died. The iPad 2,4 beat the iPad 3 by over four hours, and the original iPad 2 by over two hours.

The iPad 2,4 gets a performance boost in another area, too. You may recall a bit of controversy surrounding the new iPad shortly after its launch in mid-March. There were reports that the tablet got excessively hot, though that turned out to be a common tablet problem, not just an iPad problem. Well, it looks like the iPad 2,4 beats both its predecessor and successor in this department as well. After an hour of playing Infinity Blade II, the iPad 2,4 was a full degree (Celsius) cooler that the original iPad 2, and almost nine degrees cooler than the new iPad.

With all the performance enhancements that come with the iPad 2,4′s updated processor, you might be inclined to go out and get one instead of a new iPad. The iPad 2, after all, starts at only $399. Unfortunately, it’s not quite as simple as walking into an Apple Store or any other retailer and just picking one of these up off the shelf. For one thing, there is no discernable difference between an iPad 2,4 and an iPad 2,1-3. From the outside the tablets themselves are identical, and the boxes are identical. Nor does there appear to be any difference in model number or any other feature you might be able to access before you buy one. In fact, the only way to be sure – apart from running one of these tests – is installing a utility like Geekbench and having it check for the actual model number of the device.

What’s more, AnandTech made several attempts to get their hands on these new iPads, and only came up with the one they used for testing, which suggests that there aren’t all that many of these in circulation.

Apple Really Does Have A 7.85-inch iPad In The Labs

Though the iPad Mini has long been a creature of myth and legend – okay, maybe just rumor – there are increasingly reliable signs that point to the possibility that Apple may actually be working on a smaller version of their venerable iPad. Last month there were reports from a Samsung exec who claimed that his company would be producing the displays for a smaller iPad, wow that interesting!. Before that, there were reports that production of a 7.85-inch iPad Mini would begin sometime in the third quarter of 2012.

Now there appears to be confirmation that the iPad Mini is in development, and this time from a much more reliable source. Speaking on The Talk Show with Dan Benjamin John Gruber of Daring Fireball confirmed that Apple does indeed have a 7.85-inch iPad in development, though he said it may never see the light of day.

About an hour and eighteen minutes into the interview (which you can listen to by following the link above), Benjamin asked Gruber, “Is Apple coming out with a 7-inch iPad, and if not, why not?” Gruber discussed the issue at some length, but here’s his initial reply:

Well, I don’t know. What i do know is that they have one in the lab. … [A] 7.85-inch ipad that runs at 1024×768 and you just get the 9.7-inch iPad shrunk down a little bit. Apps woulnd’t need to be recompiled or redesigned to work on it, it’s just the iPad smaller.

It’s worth noting that this smaller iPad’s pixel dimensions – 1024×768 – are the same as those of the iPad 2, which means that the iPad Mini (or whatever they choose to call it) will have higher resolution than the iPad 2, but not a retina display, hmmm.. Gruber suggested that to to get an idea of what a 7.85-inch iPad would look like, you can take a screenshot of your iPad while it’s in portrait orientation, then when you view the screenshot, turn the iPad to landscape orientation. The smaler screenshot is roughly what a 7.85-inch iPad would look like, nicely described. The iPad Mini’s height would be about the same as the current iPad’s width.

He went on to say that there is currently no timeframe for shipment, and stressed that Apple may never ship the device at all. He reiterated Steve Jobs’s famous pronouncement that he was as proud of the products Apple didn’t release as he was of the products they did. The question Apple is asking themselves, he said, is not “why shouldn’t we release this?” it’s “why should we release this?”

Gruber went on to speculate that the iPad Mini could conceivably be unveiled at WWDC during the summer, though he stressed that that is only speculation. He also spoke about the next iPhone, which he believes is now on a fall release schedule, and will not be coming during the summer any more. Historically, Apple has announced the iPhone at WWDC during the summer. Last year’s iPhone 4S was delayed until October, however. Though some have speculated that Apple would return to a summer release schedule with the next iPhone, it is generally agreed that Apple will maintain a twelve month window between releases and launch the next iPhone in September or October.

iPad Mini: 52% Buyers Would Be Interested

Price, portability cited as main reasons for interest to buyers!

Most of the talk about Apple’s long-rumored iPad Mini has centered on the same sorts of things that other Apple rumors focus on. What would be it like? When will its going to release? How much will it cost on release? What features will it have? Will Apple release it at all in a go? The one question that industry watchers have tended to ignore is whether people would actually buy it or not.

While that might seem like a pretty big oversight, it actually makes a fair bit of sense: Apple’s other iOS products have been wildly popular, so if Apple releases an iPad Mini, there’s a pretty good chance that people will buy it just as greedily. That assumption, however, was not enough for PriceGrabber. During the last week of April, they conducted a survey to try and discover whether anybody would actually be willing to buy an iPad Mini, and the results are pretty interesting.

The survey starts with a few basic assumptions about the tablet: a 7-inch display, a $249-300 price point, and a 2012 release date. With those basic specs, they polled 2,603 online shoppers about their interest. Over half of all respondents – 52% – said that they would consider purchasing an iPad Mini. The other 48% said that they would not. Of those who responded, 22% currently own a tablet. Of those who own tablets, 68% have either an iPad or iPad 2, while 10% have the Kindle Fire.

Those respondents who expressed interest in an iPad Mini were asked to select the reasons why they would be interested. The top two features that interested people were the lower price point (64%) and the smaller size/increased portability (54%). Nearly a quarter – 24% – said that an iPad Mini would make a good gift, while one in five admitted that they just loved Apple products and would buy anything. Just over half of all respondents – 51% – said that they would consider buying an iPad Mini as a holiday gift.

Rumors of the iPad Mini have been circulating almost since the launch of the original iPad in 2010. Steve Jobs’s famous declaration that 10 inches was the lower limit for a good tablet experience has often been used to put such rumors to rest. Since Jobs’s death last October, though, rumors have begun to increase again. A month ago Daring Fireball’s John Gruber claimed to have gotten some hands-on experience with a 7.85-inch prototype in Apple’s labs, though he expressed doubts as to whether it would ever actually be released. Numerous rumors before and since have placed the iPad Mini in the 7- to 7.85-inch range. A price point somewhere between $250 and $300 has also been widely rumored, along with a third-quarter release date.

Apple, Samsung Take 99% Of Mobile Phone Profits

There’s been a lot of discussion lately of who the top smartphone maker is, with though competition between all gaints. In the previous quarter Samsung became both the top smartphone maker and the top mobile phone maker overall in the previous quarter, all three of the biggest carriers activated more iPhones.

Ultimately, though, questions of unit sales and market share are secondary. The big question is, simply, who made more money, ofcourse? Samsung may have beaten Apple by just over 7 million unit sales, but which company turned a higher profit? In this, Apple is the winner by a sizable margin. According to a recent study by Asymco, Apple raked in a whopping 73% of all profits in the smartphone market. Samsung came in a distant second with 26%. That, you may notice, leaves a mere 1% for every other smartphone maker to share. As it turns out, though, the other smartphone makers don’t actually share that last 1%. It all goes to HTC. Every other smartphone maker – RIM, Nokia, LG, Motorola, etc. – lost money in the past quarter.

While the percentage graph is impressive, it’s also a bit misleading, as it ignores the changes in the amount of available profit in the mobile phone industry. When the fact that profits have grown dramatically over the past few years is factored in, the picture becomes much more remarkable.

The first graph could make it seem that Apple (and, to a lesser extent, Samsung) ate away at the profits of their competitors, The second makes it clear that, in a addition to that, Apple also drove massive overall growth in the mobile phone market. When the iPhone came along in 2007, the profits for the entire mobile phone industry (which was dominated by Nokia at the time), were around $4 billion. In the years since the iPhone – and especially since 2010, the mobile phone market’s profits have grown astronomically, due primarily to the iPhone.

A study at Chitika Insights claims that Apple's iPad account for an overwhelming amount of all tablet-based internet traffic. Chitika Insights, the research arm of the Chitika ad network, studied its database of ad impressions and found that 94.64 percent of all tablet web traffic can be attributed to the iPad.

Samsung Galaxy Tab stood on the second place and contributes to 1.22 percent of the market, while the Asus Transformer Prime in the third place at 1.2 percent. In last place was Barnes and Noble's Nook which took 0.54 percent of the market, Barnes and Nook recently went tied a strategic partnership with Microsoft to start a new e-book business. The iPad growth is getting stronger and stronger day by day with increased demand globally. iPad shows no signs of slowing despite increased competition from Android.

iThief Stole Over 100 iPads In 36 Different Cities Across Texas - Caught On CCTV

A women named as iThief has been roaming in Texas stealing dozon of iPads costing more than $56,000. This iThief has hit 36 cities in North Texas from 28 Walmart stores and 8 target stores.

Collin County Bureau says she has stolen over 100 iPads from these stores. According to the police she visits the store in the early morning leaving groceries at the counter and then walking out of the store with two or three iPads.

Her latest target was Sherman Walmart where she was caught on the camera.

The Modus operandi  is that the women enters the store as a normal shopping person. She fills her shopping cart with the groceries, she then goes to the electronic department saying that she wants to buy 2-3 iPads, the customer service assists her to the billing counter with the iPads. While the billing is still in process, this women slips in the iPads into the bag that she brought along with her and then leaves the store saying that she needs to get more money from her car and never returs.

Often considered as the successor of Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, Scott Forstall the senior vice president of Apple SVP has sold a major portion of his shares, taking the advantage of Apple's healthy stock value. Scott Forstall sold 64,151 shares at a price ranging in between $601 to $605. His 64,151 shares summed to $38.7 Million. Forstall still has 2,988 shares the current price of which is $1.8 Million.

This doesn't mean that Scott Forstall is planning to quit Apple, its just that he grabbed an apple at the right moment. According to Fortune, these shares were the remains of a 120,000-share retention bonus that was granted in 2008, vested last month and reduced by 55,849 shares on March 24 to pay taxes. 

Although the sale represented 95% of Forstall's current Apple holdings, that doesn't mean he's getting ready to leave the company. He has two more retention bonuses in the wings:

• 100,000 restricted stock units (RSUs) that were granted in 2010 and vest in 2014
• 150,000 RSUs granted in 2011 that vest in equal parts in 2013 and 2016, provided he stays with the company

Apple & Samsung Are Taking Away Entire Revenue Of Mobile Market

A day ago, we discussed how Apple and Google are competing against each other and as the chats show Apple activates more iOS devices which includes iPhones and iPads, covering 80% of mobile and e-reading platform. Remaining 20% is covered by Google's Android with majority of devices belonging to Samsung.

According Raymond James, an analyst at Tavis McCourt, Apple and Samsung are reaping all the revenue from Mobile Market barely leaving anything for the remaining firms. McCourt also, notes that last quarter Apple account for 80% of all mobile industry profits and Samsung got the remaining 20%. The two mobile giant companies together also captured 74% of the mobile industry's revenue. The pace at which these firms are bagging in the profits and taking control of the entire market, the day will soon come when Samsung and apple will take 90% mobile market revenue, says an analyst at UBS

"It is getting increasingly hard to understand where the rest of the device vendors will get the capital to fund necessary R&D and sales and marketing investments to continue to compete with Apple and Samsung," the analyst wrote in a recent note to investors" - Raymond James

With essentially all of the other hardware vendors besides Apple and Samsung struggling to find profits to reinvest into R&D, Microsoft and Google have to be wondering who their hardware partners will ultimately be," McCourt continued. "Neither wants to be in a position where they have to take on more of the R&D burden, and neither want to have to initiate bidding wars to give Samsung an incentive to focus on its platform. Our assumption is that both Huaweii and ZTE will be courted heavily over the next few quarters by both Microsoft and Google as they look to strengthen their stable of sustainable hardware partners - BGR
